SUMMARY:Every Somewhere Sacred: Rescuing a Theology of Place
DESCRIPTION:Our identity as followers of Jesus can and should transform how we live in the physical world. We need a far more expansive Christian imagination for land and place. Common American narratives that reduce land to commodity\, or irrelevant background miss the consistent emphasis in the biblical story that God created and cares for land and place. We should grapple with complicated American histories of land and Indigenous people\, race and social class\, and reapproach Biblical themes of land as home\, gift\, sacrament\, and kin to help prompt Christian groups and individuals to work toward a Christian vision of land mattering in the past\, present\, and future.  We can recover Christian practices for living faithfully as members of our human geographies. And perhaps most importantly\, we can receive the world itself as the gift it was intended to be. \nMy dissertation (PhD – Azusa Pacific University) explores how people learn and grow and how educational sectors become ideological battlegrounds\, using a regional study of Palestinian colleges and universities in the occupied West Bank. \nDirector of the Network of Evangelicals for the Middle East and author of upcoming book Every Somewhere Sacred: Rescuing a Theology of Place in the American Imagination.

SUMMARY:Experiencing Spatial Analytics in Business
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, Dr Girju (professor of marketing and analytics) and her students\, will present a series of hands-on\, experiential studies in spatial analytics in business developed in their Spatial Analytics in Business class at California Baptist University. Students will present a study of church membership at a medium size church with 4 locations in the Inland Empire area. Other projects with non-profits and churches will be described. Much more can be accomplished by Christians in GIS\, so Dr Girju will make a call for stronger connections with the Christian GIS and Christian business world. \nDr. Marina Girju has 20+ years of industry experience and holds degrees in computer science\, marketing and Management Science. In the Strategic Business Analytics and Insights concentration dr. Girju designed Spatial Analytics in Business\, a key class with a strong focus on experiential learning. All learning materials are case studies of business problems and opportunities and in every class there are a few hands-on consulting projects with non-profit organizations and churches.  She is currently writing a book of case studies for spatial analytics in business and is looking for Christian organizations eager to collaborate with her classes to solve business problems with spatial analytics. \nDr Marina Girju is professor of Marketing and Analytics and Associate Dean at California Baptist University in the JABS School of Business.

SUMMARY:Q&A about Samaritans's Purse response to hurricane Helene
DESCRIPTION:Hurricane Helene\, a category 4 hurricane that came ashore late on September 26th in the Big Bend region of Florida\, became an overwhelming tropical storm once it slowed over the Southeast United States\, devastating a large swath of the Appalachian Mountains with torrential rains and wind. The rains soaked the high country of Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee\, causing widespread flooding that was beyond many people’s wildest expectations. \nSamaritan’s Purse’s backyard is Western North Carolina\, so we quickly became both those affected by the storm and those that were responding to the needs among our neighbors and friends. Our GIS groups in both North American Ministries and International Projects were called in to help with analysis of the impacts and  how we could best respond. \nThis presentation will be a Question and Answer time  that will dig into Samaritan’s Purse’s efforts utilizing GIS to respond to  Hurricane Helene and what we learned to help us respond to other major disasters in the future.

SUMMARY:Implementing GIS at Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF)
DESCRIPTION:Frank: ‘In the past six months since my arrival at MAF-US\, we have implemented a wide variety of GIS solutions to MAF’s staff. Given MAF-US non-profit status\, we have highly leveraged Esri’s very generous non-profit program software package. This software has included ArcGIS Online\, ArcGIS Enterprise\, ArcGIS Pro\, Drone2Map\, Collector\, and Survey123.’ \nThe talk will cover what has been rolled out over the past six months and describe some of our future plans for GIS at MAF-US. \nIn the early part of his career Frank was the GIS Manager for the Coeur d’Alene Tribe. Frank joined Innovate Inc. in 2011 and coordinated a very talented group of solution architects and geospatial programmers. as IT Director. His team primarily crafts mobile and web-based geospatial solutions for clients throughout the USA. In January 2023\, Frank stepped down from his full-time role at Innovate\, and has become a part time Sr. Subject Matter Expert in GIS for Innovate. \nTo fill up his extra time Frank has taken on a job with Mission Aviation Fellowship\, where he provides support to MAF’s global fleet of pilots and mechanics as MAF’s Global Data Architect. When Frank isn’t thinking about technology\, he fills his time by making music with his wife and taking his children and grandchildren fishing as much as possible. \nFrank Roberts sr. DESCRIPTION:Ethics in GIS has become a hot topic in recent years. From conversations guided by EthicalGEO\, to American Association of Geographer’s initiatives to implement locational data ethics in the classroom\, to conferences such as AutoCarto2022’s focused theme Ethics in Mapping: Integrity\, Inclusion\, and Empathy\, GIS practitioners can hardly miss some touch point on ethics. As good as ethics are in GIS\, is there more? In this webinar\, Dr. VanHorn reviews current conversations on ethics in GIScience and offers a nuanced perspective based in a Christian approach to GIS ethics. He explores the intersections of ethics juxtaposed with virtues and argues that our GIScience efforts should be rooted in a virtue-driven approach\, which has implications for justice\, land\, cities\, and citizens.\ndr. Jason E. VanHorn \nOriginally from Indiana\, Dr. VanHorn grew up with a fascination for maps. At an early age he became interested in cartography from the various road atlases and National Geographic Magazine thematic maps that he came across. Professor VanHorn joined the GEO department at Calvin College in 2007.

SUMMARY:The Butterfly Effect and Arcmap
DESCRIPTION:Loren Muehlius \nJohn Guthrie \nWe will follow a project which began as helping someone at Global Recordings Network\, a missions organization\, learn ArcMap. The project grew from this to creating an interactive map on the internet for the organization. Most of the webinar will be demonstrating the map and seeing how Leaflet and Enterprise ArcGIS Server were used to create the map. \nLoren Muehlius (BS\, Cartography\, University of Wisconsin\, 1976) worked at a regional planning agency in Wisconsin helping finish computerized mapping of land use. In 1986\, he joined Global Mapping International (GMI) where he focused on helping missionaries with mapping. When GMI closed in 2017\, Loren was fortunate to continue his missionary mapping work with LightSys Technology Services. \nJohn Guthrie (BS\, Syracuse University\, 1978) started as a map surveyor for USGS. In 1986 he moved to Colorado and primarily worked in research for USGS. John has worked with ESRI web mapping products especially in relation to wildland fire and water resources. Though he retired in 2013\, he is still working part-time for USGS. He volunteered for GMI and LightSys and has traveled to over 30 countries on short-term missions trips. He currently spends the winter with his wife Margaret in Arizona.

SUMMARY:Spirit-Led Technology and GIS
DESCRIPTION:We are all taught that modern tools empower us to manage with insight and innovation in our efforts to make the world a better place\, and for faith-based initiatives to produce great outcomes for God’s Kingdom. Yet… we also believe Jesus is Lord over all. Pete will review how that conflict came to a head for him (a high-end numbers guy)\, how that has worked out in the past\, present\, and practical examples of how you can move toward a future of radically God-driven perspective in your own work. We’ll leave plenty of time for Q&A in this workshop. \nPete HolzmannICTA Executive Director // Spirit-Led Technologist and Global Mission Influencer. \nPete’s been an executive strategy and info/tech consultant for many decades. Working from a tech background as a Silicon Valley consultant\, he helped pioneer a number of technologies\, from GIS to database\, email to hard drives. Among other things\, the “10/40 Window” emerged from his work to create the first desktop GIS. Perhaps most unusual: together with Cecilia Mikolajczak he helps the body of Christ learn how to nurture our intimate trust relationship both with God and one another\, all in the practical context of modern high tech. Pete and his wife Leslie live in Colorado. They have two adult daughters and three young granddaughters.
