The Science Behind Maps, Data, and Decisions

Joseph Kerski interviewed by Jeff Zweerink on Reasons to Believe

Geographer and GIS professional Joseph Kerski, PhD GISP, was recently interviewed on Reasons to Believe, a Christian apologetics ministry that explores how science and Scripture point to the same God. He was interviewed by astrophysicist Jeff Zweerink, who hosts RTB’s conversations on discoveries with theological and philosophical implications, and together they discuss how geography and the geographic perspective connect to a Christian worldview.

The episode, titled The Science Behind Maps, Data, and Decisions, asks a simple but far-reaching question: what is where, why is it there, and why should we care? Kerski unpacks what geography is — and what it isn’t — and explains why GIS, GPS, and remote sensing matter for sustainable, ethical, and resilient decision making, from energy and habitats to public health and supply chains. He also reflects on how a Christian worldview aligns with geography’s underlying ethic of care for the earth and the people who live on it.

It’s a great watch for anyone in our community who has ever wondered how the day-to-day work of mapping and spatial analysis connects to a bigger calling.
